I had a name that was ridiculed and laughed at right up through adulthood (I finally changed my legal name when I was over 30). My parents were new immigrants who didn’t know the language. My father picked out a name from a list purely by how it sounded. I learned later that my birth certificate was held up for several months because the official wanted my father to reconsider, but he didn't. My experience is not what I would wish on anyone.I’m not suggesting that parents casually choose names that may hurt their children. I’m saying that in American/European culture, people restrict themselves to a very limited set of names for no other reason than it is the convention. That article about Brazil was written to entertain and I’m sure it was over the top. Most Brazilians do not have outlandish names but many probably do have imaginative yet beautiful ones. I know that in Chinese culture, it is routine to make up a unique original name. To me, “Audio Science†is unusual but anyone will hardly give it a thought after seeing it the second time.
