Most access points seem to be a Router/Fierwall also, so most people should be OK on that front.No, not OK. A firewall can protect you from attacks from the Internet. The access point is behind the firewall, simply a wireless extension of the LAN. If someone breaks into the WiFi, it is like they plugged an Ethernet cable directly into your LAN.
