Tubed preamp w/sand amp is most cost effective way to get benefits of tubes with adequate power. If you really want a tubed amp, get one that also has adequate power, at least 70 to 100 wpc pp. Then, make sure it matches the speaker load. Get a speaker that's relatively efficient, 90+ dB's into 8 ohms, and, of course, with a sound you really enjoy. SET amps can sound wonderful, but a good one costs a fortune, and the same goes for ultra efficient speakers with good sound; IMO tough to find without spending an arm and a leg.
