I think it's simpler than that, Bruce....

The radical subjectivists project their personal preference into scientific cause and effect, or deify their preference into something they belief should be universal, when it's nothing more than their personal preference.

The radical objectivists (I'm not one ,and I don't see many here) expect people to prove their preference, which is also an absurd act.

A preference needs no cause, and until it passes the 'end of the nose' warrants no complaints or examination.

To me, the debate comes about because people who want to deify their preference make all sorts of silly accusations, like the mistakes about math being science, the insults about pseudoscience, the ad-hominem attacks of a Don T who doesn't like seeing the mythology boiled and served for pudding, or the confusion about what kinds of type 2 errors are commonly possible in a listening test.

There's no need or reason to justify a preference from any side. If you like it, you like it. End of disucussion.

If you want to know why you like it, then it gets complicated, and things like DBT's and the like need to be involved, to find out WHY you like it. Such things may also change your preference, which is yet another reason I don't enter into the "prove your preference" debate, it's not only rude to question preference, but also to affect someone's preference and spoil their entertainment, I think.

If you want to work in the scientific area, then, of course, the rules change a great deal, but I don't think that's the general desire of people here.
