A difference in perception

Hi chiggy,

"a components ability to reproduce depth is creation, no? perhaps this is miscommunication more than anything."

I don't agree. If the component is "creating" depth it is creating (additive) distortion. There are some components that do this. I don't find them to be faithful to their input and wouldn't buy them. I realize however that some people like this type of editorializing by a component. Look at the success of the old Bose 901 (hardly what I'd deem an "honest" speaker) at doing just this.

" "the component and information on whatever medium you choose do not reproduce depth - the brain does. one channel can only reproduce depth via differing volume levels and ambient information - still a far weaker system than 2 or more channels."

If all is working properly, the component reproduces what is contained in the recording. The brain perceives it. (If the brain were creating it I wouldn't call it "depth", I'd call it "imagination".) One channel can indeed carry distance information. If you cover one ear, you can still tell which of two speakers is closer to you. Two channels are required for depth (as opposed to distance).

"and i do believe everything can be measured...its more about defining what it is one seeks and finding criteria and a context to measure it in. and yes, this can go back and forth. good overall thread though isn't it?"

You have more faith in current technology than I do. I can't imagine how one would begin to measure something like an Experience (or a feeling). As to back and forth, sometimes exchanges of this sort can provide food for thought. I find them one of the more valuable parts of the AudioAsylum Experience. Thanks for your input.

Happy Listening!
Barry
