shutting down VPC

It is possible to either shut down just like normal PC or save the current state. Restarting from the saved state is substantially faster than rebooting the PC part.

One caveat is that your date/time will be way off. If it was shut down the last time, VPC will read the current time off from the mac side, but not so if reloading from the last state. I use VPC mainly for maintaining the bank account electronically (the local banks only support Windows), and this has an interesting effect when I try to view the last 30 days transaction, for example.

One nice aspect of the new version of VPC (I don't have it but read about it) is that you can "undo" what is done to the PC. For instance, if a newly installed program crashes constantly and make the whole OS unstable, you can go back to the state before the problematic program was installed. I think it is done by not actually changing the HD content, but just keep adding the files that have changed. This method takes up more HD space, but is safer. One can recover the lost HD space by updating the HD to the current state and forgetting about its past, once confident about the current setup. Pretty neat.

BTW I am using W98 on my VPC, and it is very slow but mostly usable. More current OS such as XP will definitely need fancier CPU and more RAM.
