I think the reason why Maggies don't sound good at low volumes is simply that the ear becomes less sensitive to the frequency extremes as documented by the Fletcher-Munsen curves. The effect is pronounced on Maggies since these speakers can sound real at the right volume, and the ear/brain just don't perceive sounds as real when played back at volumes far below their real-life SPLs.
