I tried the blanket trick in the past and it didn't do much for me either. I recommend that you buy some Auralex foam and experiment with it. It is relatively inexpensive compared to the "audiophile" type products out there. You can find them easily at almost any musical instrument store i.e.. big chains like Sam Ash and Guitar Center. I've had fantastic results using said products. Here are some pictures of the front of my room:
