Well, perhaps, but... perhaps one should give HP something of his due.Room correction is great--in theory. But the Tact is not the only approach. SigTech makes an impressive product, and the SigTech actively corrects for reflections, admittedly at the cost of confining the correction to a sweet spot.
The problem with all such devices is that they are limited by the audio quality of the processing they use. I recall discussing such units over the phone with HP himself a couple of years back (when I was still in good odour), funny you should bring his initials up, and HP said that the digital processing sucked all the life out of the music. (I still remember being shocked that he never had deigned to drop a footnote in any of the ecstatic praises other writers in his magazine were heaping on all such units, including the rdp, but mine was not to question why. And I did differ with him over the audio quality of the processors in the rdp, in fact.)
I am unaware of any world-class mastering studio using digital room correction.
Aaaannnnd, to use digital room correction with LPs or SACDs you have to put an A to D box in the chain.
Rather than joining Fukuyama and announcing the End of History (funny, we seem up to our keesters in history right at the moment), why not say "Digital room correction, within its inherent limitations, performs as intended."
I'll drink to that!
Cordially,
John Marks
