Science has been under attack for centuries. It goes on on this forum all the time, to give a very minor example. You've seen all the cracks about the "men in the white coats." More seriously, as I've pointed out, the US President feels that intelligent design should be taught along side evolution, Evolution is a scientific theory, and intelligent design is not and has no place in a science class. That's too strong a statement. If I were teaching a class on evolution, I would be sure to include a discussion of intelligent design to be sure my students know how baseless its claims are. But that's not what they want high school teachers to do. In my astronomy classes I usually give a lecture on astrology so that people can see how silly or, more accurately, how baseless it is.Another small example of anti-science in our country can be found at the Grand Canyon. The National Park Visitors' Center there sells a book which explains the Grand Canyon as being a result of Noah's Flood. When asked to remove this nonsense, the government's response was that it probably shouldn't be there, but it sells so well. These are just two small examples, but very often I read in the paper casesof thinking by our government officials that reveal little or no understanding of science or outright contempt for it. Global warming is one example. Our president's statements anout hydrogen fuel cells is another. The value of drilling for oil in the Alakan Wilderness is another. Those claims that those metal tubes that were suppose to be for reactors in Iraq a few years back were just plain crazy to anyone who understood reactor physics and engineering. It just goes on.
