Mike,
It sure is a good sign when a system is left unchanged for 3 years. I don't think many inmates can say that. I know I can't, but then again I'm only into this high end thing for about three years now.
Still, it never stops to amaze me how different people respond to certain components. It seems the higher you get, the more differences in sound you're likely to find.It seems the Krell 300cd in particular has been the subject of very opposed experiences and opinions on audioreview. As you probably have guessed by now, I own one and am completely happy with its sound.
I started out with the 300i and 300cd combo like you did, after trying out the 250cd first. I liked the sound of that one too, but mechanically it was mediocre (no, I'm not one of those completely uncritical Krell disciples).
After a while I found out that the 300i was the weaker of the two (even though at the time I bought it I thought it was pretty terrific, having used a Densen Beat B-100 before it) and the sound greatly improved after getting an FPB 200 plus 250p. This set up really makes my Maggies sing. But still I know that the 250p is holding the performance back and I will soon be upgrading to a KRC-3 or possibly a used KRC HR. I still believe the 300cd can hold its own against most of the competition and I'm sure it can keep up with the improvements the preamp change will bring about.I still can't imagine how anyone could label the 300cd as a bad component, but I guess it's different gears to different ears.
So let's just be thankful there are so many components on the market to choose from and that each and everyone can find the sound they really like.happy listening,
hans
