If your idea of a good sounding preamp isn't a wire with gain, then I agree that the BAT VK-3i is terrible sounding. Although the VK-3i isn't perfect, it does less to alter the signal than you might expect.

For an experiment why not try yanking your PV2 out of your system and drive your power amp directly with the output of your $4,000 CD player? If you can tell me that you hear no difference, then we'll have to discuss whether or not you're sober. My point is that your PV2, as listenable as you may think it is, impacts the sound in a vary major way. If you were to do this same experiment with a VK-3i you'd be a lot harder pressed to hear its effects on the signal.
