For me at least I have very different mindset when listening to a person or professional system, than I do when evaluating a component I might want to add to my system.
When listening to a system, I'm often listening to the system builders experience. They level of time, commitment and passion is often highly evident in either its abundance or the lack of it.
A vetern hobbyist personal system listen can often help steer less experienced person away from well earned mistakes. Help instill a balance of required/desired/trivial to the components/layout/room challenges that type of system encourages.
Trying to evaluate a component that I might want to either purchase or see what all the hype is for new product/company, very different mindset.
I first have to try to relate to all the other components. Experiences of the past are the put in bias categories - that's a Bright amp company, that's a Recessed media player company, those are BoomTizz speaker company. Understanding this I then can do many of the things others listed in thread.
Really not trying to nit pick between listening to system vs listening for a components contrbution, just think a distinction exists between those two listenings
