First, I agree that you can really only be certain of a component listening in your own system. But definitely shrill, harsh, glary treble is insufferable. A little more than a year ago I acquired a VTV Purifi-based amplifier. This is definitely and detail, transparent, and 'airy' amp. However I first got the amp with the Hypex I/O buffer, (which VTV called "standard"); the treble came across like finger nails on a chalkboard, especially a higher volumes.
I got VTV to send me their proprietary I/O buffer with a Sparkos SS3602 discrete op amp. A huge improvement "chalkboard" gone -- yes, op amps can make a difference. I tried a few other op amps including the recently popular (integrated) OPA1602 and the (discrete) Burson V6 Vivid, but settled on the Sparkos as best to my liking.
NOT the 51st state, eh!?!
