RE: the worst of all evils when evaluating a hifi system ..... is ?

Are the "evils" in the context of the procedural part of evaluating a hi-fi system or what you end up hearing while evaluating a hi-fi system?

And is it in the context of evaluating my own system or any system?

The worst evil procedurally in evaluating my own system is making judgment on quick listen..... I have become conditioned to doing a "second day test" or even a "third day test" to get a better picture..... Sometimes taking as long as several weeks.

The most common evil I encounter in my system or someone else's system, from purely a listening standpoint, is poor signal linearity..... I sometimes call it "dynamic shout"..... It's often mistaken for "bright sound," but cutting down the treble doesn't really fix anything....... And most often, problems with dynamic linearity are rooted in the bass part of the frequency range, even though the symptoms are noticed at the other end of the frequency range.

The worst evil procedurally in evaluating a system *other* than my own is not paying close enough attention to recording quality or pressing..... In which the selected tracks are often sonically compromised...... If I don't think I'm hearing unadulterated recordings on someone else's audio system, I usually refrain from commenting on the sound altogether. (I think the most common cause of misdiagnosis of "poor sound" on an audio system is the unsuspecting use of compromised pressings/recordings for evaluation.... They tend to lead audiophiles to erroneous conclusions that something is awry with the gear, and then try changes that don't fix anything.)
