The advice would be to utilize dispersion devices on sidewalls rather than absorbers. That would retain the sonic information but delay it by scattering it around the room. Absorbers may not be a good answer anyway since they typically only function with mid to high frequencies (thick enough devices for low frequencies are hardly ever utilized). Remaining low frequency reflections may do the most damage in "muddying" the sonics with too short of a reflection time.
