I'm not setting up a basement mosh pit and although I like the Thiels, they sounded best when I had them on the longer side of the room with more space away from the side walls. That's no longer a practical option, for now.I've seen folks run larger Thiels in a near field setup but to me that sort of defeats the strengths that Thiels are known for - specifically they sound fantastic in larger rooms where there's space to pull them away from the walls.
The Tannoys are much more 'real world' room friendly so I'm experimenting with their placement. It's a more full-bodied sounding speaker with a great midrange and lower mids, rounder bass. Treble is surprisingly good too with it's concentric driver. One big difference is that the Thiels go deeper, tighter, and faster in the bass and they're a little more detailed but they sound best when played loud.I'm starting to consider a sub to go with the Tannoys but not until I'm finished with their placement.
