for 30 years I've used 4-6 feet apart max. Why?
I've usually had limited space except once when it taught me how lousy things sounded the further away you were, the so called 'far-field'. More room = more problems. One of the only things it's good for is having guests over and relaxing in more than one space - also home theatre I guess and I don't bother with that. 99% of the time I'm in one spot.
Mixing desks in recording are NEAR field to help eliminate room effects.
When I listen, I'm in the MID field. With vinyl and the Quads, ticks and pops take on a completely different space and it's usually way off to the right/left of my ears or in the middle in front of the speakers. Sometimes 'in the head' middle. Anomalies like this are completely separated from the music. On occasion I'll hear something way off to the right or left separated, and I mean 180 degrees completely. It's probably due to the L/R out of phase relationship in the groove and a mixing engineer who knows how to take advantage and spook people.
The painting in the room I found buried in a forgotten corner of Home Goods by a Russian emigre Ksenia to Canada. It looks like She had a 'vision' of Apocalypse and had to put it to canvas. Lately it no longer seems like a mere vision.
I'm guessing here, but Theoretica put all kinds of things together with the power of digital to everyone's great advantage, but the cost for now is a bit overwhelming for most, including me.
