"Give it a try again"

Well, I'll be damned, Cougar! My XLS 2002 2 Series amp has seen more than 100 hours, via subwoofer duty. I hooked it up yesterday afternoon as the only amp in the system (so no sub), did a "Reset Factory Defaults" and let it play.

I sat down to listen last night, and this is a very much improved sound over what I wrote about when it was new, out of the box. If you recall, I used a Bleeding Ear graphic in one of our prior discussions about the Crowns. There was far less of that last night. Don't get me wrong, I won't be selling my First Watt F1J or any of my tube amps, which still sound better to me, but I wasn't anxious to shut it down either, even after five albums.

mhardy6647 asked: "Oh, also: I'd be curious to know just what it is that's "breaking in" in a pulse-width modulation amplifier circuit? The filter networks' capacitors, perhaps?" , and that had been my question too. I bought the Crown as a sub amp. I tried it full range when I first got it, after giving it a few hours for the power supply caps to settle, but that was it. I never bothered going back to it for 20-20k duty, because that's not what I purchased it for. I can't tell you what "broke in", but clearly something changed. And this can't be one of those, "Oh, you just got used to the sound. Your ears/brain adapted" things, because I hadn't been listening to it, except as a sub amp.

In retrospect, it probably wasn't fair of me to dismiss the amp with an ear bleeding condemnation, after only a 10-minute audition. But like mhardy, I had questions about what would break in. It's clearly not a giant killer in my system , but it's a much better amp than I thought it was for full range use.
