M3, your post caused me to flash back to that period & realize I made an error in naming my equipment. I actually had an AU/TU 717, not a receiver. The only problem I had was that it didn't have the stones (rated I believe @ 75wpc) to drive my Maggies to the level I desired. I stepped it up a little to a Hafler power & pre which was rated at about 110wpc I think? Not that much of an increase in wattage, but it clearly outperformed the Sansui, though still not in the class of the Macs. Didn't mean to impugn the integrity of the 717 because I really thought a lot of it. It just couldn't push the Maggies in my room. I don't remember the model # of the Magneplanars, but does MG1's sound right? They were approx 6ft tall, and this was in 1978.
