you just got to get about a little bit more than you do!
The first time I ever heard Jimmy Cobb play, I said to the guy I went with that this was absolutely the best brass that I'd ever heard. And that was by a long shot. Impeccable timing, the actual drums were tuned just right as to not over power anyone else. Blade is one of my favorite drummers, but still not quite in the with Elvin and Mad Harold. Then you get into the actual style of play, and Art Blakey just drops in your face like a sledge hammer. Musicians often referred to Art's style as "church music". If you saw him live, you picked up on his seemingly forward and coming at you style; yet never over powering anyone else.
Now I'm an upright bass person, and I know a few upright bass players. Most of the better players play with a certain feel of the music, and a love affair the bass itself. The better ones often play a quarter beat to even a half beat ahead and behind the down beat to change the mood or aura of the sound. Yet usually play half the song right on the standard time. One guy out of NYC used to actually loosen one of the strings to get a lower note in the middle of the song. When confronted he simply said it was a feeling that was needed. There is nothing like listening to Marc Johnson clawing at the neck of an upright in perfect acoustics. It'll make a serious impression on what the instrument can do. By the way I'd recommend listening to some cuts with Scott Lafaro in them. He was the best there was or is. But died way way too young!
