you just need a good recording of drums and a good hifi

Here are two recordings of drums that sound like real life to me:

1) The track "Old Hymn" on Charlie Byrd's eponymous 45 rpm direct-to-disk 12" on white vinyl (Crystal Clear Records) - shown above in situ on a cheap-jack (dump find) SL-2Q with a DL-103 at my house (being dubbed to tape, as it happens)...

2) "Hands With a Hammer" Terry Bozzio on Frank Zappa's "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 3" collection (this one I only have on one of them little silvery discs)

Try 'em both on for size and report back to the class.

Oh, here's a special runner up: Copeland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" performed by the "Atlanta Brass Ensemble" on Crystal Clear Records "Sonic Fireworks (Vol 1)" direct to disk LP. This is more of the "boom-boom" school... but it's sho-nuff impressive! There's a fairly similar boom-boom opus (same work) on a low-priced CD sampler once sold by Telarc. I don't recall the exact title (nor the artist.

all the best,
mrh
