I was so accustomed into thinking that the digital formats finally had it right but I found out I was wrong.
Digital formats. Yes, there are quite a few. And Redbook, saddled with 1980 storage technology is indeed limited as compared with the best analog. The problem is not digital per se - rather any number of arbitrary formats that are decidedly limited in one way or another.
I am enjoying a 24/96 recording of the Goldfinger soundtrack that in every way betters the vinyl version. It contains the HF extension and harmonic integrity of the LP and has far superior low end and is much quieter. And certainly better than the CD version I also have.
The real issue is whether or not you choose fidelity over content. Earlier, I was listening to the John Williams soundtrack of Memoirs of a Geisha . I can live with all the limitations of the format just to listen to the beautiful music. :)
