The assumption is that the wife is a at worst hostile audience, at best uninterested party, so if she hears a difference, it has to be real.
Plus one other person that heard it besides the person buying - adds credibility.
And you guys make a number of sexist assumptions, my wife got me into vinyl after I got her into good sound reproduction. She is as much an audiophile as I.
But we rarely seek validation from others about what sounds good - our friends think we're nuts for the amount of time and effort we've lavished on our setup - and the amount of money we've spent, but we love it, and we are very much in cahoots with each other on this thing. If we were to wax philosophical about how great a cable improved something - and someone were to come on strongly on how that couldn't possibly be true because of some calculations hoe or she did ... we just chuckle and move on.
