"'tis the difference between an audiophile and a music lover. If you put on real jazz and love it for the sake of the fine music and can listen past the somewhat dated sound, you are a music lover. If you've just got to hear what Live at Merkin Hall sounds like on those new speakers, you most probably are an audiophile."
I wouldn't call them an audiophile but an "equipment lover" as I would say all "music audiophiles" love music first and foremost however they do strive for the most realistic sound they can afford but don't stress over it and would rather spend money on music when they have spare cash.
Also you are aware many of the great jazz and even some obscure Jazz from the 1950's-60's have had multiple audiophile remasters. In addition a lot of modern jazz is actually quite good.
I get rid of all music I don't like and music in crummy sound. If I really, really like the music on a crummy sounding recording I will spend decades to find an acceptable sounding version.
Music is a hobby to be enjoy I say bah humbug to both great sounding recordings of bad music and bad sounding recordings of good music.
I WANT IT ALL!!! Great music, great performances in state of the art sound of music I love.
