It was when I was in elementary school - the sixth grade, 1957. My friends dad was a diehard audio nut. He built a mono system in his basement consisting of a Dynakit MKIII (I think) tube amp and a matching preamp, Dynakit FM tuner, Rek-O-Kut Rondine turntable w/Pickering cartridge, a Viking R-t-R tape deck and a large corner horn enclosure that he built from plans that featured a poured in place concrete front baffle that housed a 15" Triaxial speaker. One day after school we snuck down to the ol' man's lair and started playing records.
I had never heard true component audio before, and from that moment I was hooked. In less than two years I made the subway pilgrimage to Cortlandt Street in Manhattan where I bought my own modest little hi-fi system consisting of a Harmon-Kardon 10-watt tube intergrated and matching FM tuner, a Garrard (I think it was a 'Type A') changer w/Pickering cartridge, and an Electro-Voice 'Leyton' bookshelf speaker system. It took myself and three pals to lug this stuff home on the BMT.
That was the beginning of a seemingly never ending journey. And I still love it!
Cheers,
Al
