In 1978 I bought a B&O 2404 turntable. It came standard with their least expensive cartridge, which retailed for $20. A month later I replaced it with their most expensive cartridge, a $200 MMC 20CL equipped with a line contact tip on a saphire cantilever. At the time I couldn't believe I was spending that kind of money for something so tiny. That purchase was the biggest single quality jump I've made in my 43 year pursuit. All the others have been worthwhile refinements, but none nearly as dramatic an improvement. The table and cartridge remain my back-up, and it still sounds as good as it looks!
