....that the Shure V-15 Type III was a better sounding cartridge than the Type IV...... I've never had a Type III, so I cannot confirm.....
I was also told that the Type V was a better sounding unit as well..... At least the high-end rags didn't trash it like the Type IV.
The reviews for the Type IV showed a ruler flat response...... One of the flattest cartridges ever measured by Stereo Review.... But in retrospect, although the Type IV was flat in a frequency sweep, the downfall was the cartridge had a dynamic signature that represented a "soft limiter"..... Or in other words, it was not particularly linear in dynamic response, relative to most other cartridges.
I was in college, in Santa Barbara.... When I replaced the Shure V-15 IV with the Grace F-9E, the improvement in sound was noticed by just about everyone..... It actually made some fellow college mates purchase an F-9E for themselves. (Note that a lot of people had vinyl-based systems at the time. It was just before the compact disc became known.)![]()
