Yes, that album certainly has PPS (punch, presence and sizzle)! Not to forget the judicious and generally appropriate use of EQ and reverb on each channel and great balance among the musicians. We should all applaud the knowledge, skills and painstaking preparation of the production team. Bill Schnee is one of my audio production engineering heroes, and he did a wonderful job on this project; although, I think he knows of a few warts which bother him but most people won't notice.
Still, for a critical listener, it's a stretch to say that some of those instruments sounded "real" in their own right. But they sounded real enough within the context of their role as background instruments, and that's a sign of great engineering.
As long as I'm on the topic of this album, what the heck is that instrument at the beginning of "Reggae Tune". The one that goes "thud", "thud". It kinda sounds like a kick bass drum, but not really.
