At Victors in Chicago in the late 80s:

Double Quad ESLs with custom subs driven by Mark Levinson electronics from a Sota table.

Small jazz band playing in the room kind of sound

At home same time period in my mid-fi set up:

Audio Technica ATH-7 headphones driven by a NAD 3020 from a Dual CS 505 with an Ortofon

Hauntingly good on vocals and acoustic instruments.

I do not know if my expectations have been upped over time or if these experiences were really that good, but I have a distinct memory of both being great.
