I was exposed to classical more deeply in high school band as a french hornist. It was OK from 1967 when I started, till 1970 or so. By then my love of rock and roll and what's known as classic rock blew away any education I'd amassed before then, playing first chair in our local junior philharmonic orchestra. No orchestra in high school, concert band and marching band instead, and there was still a bit of classical repertoire. In drum corps (Belleville Black Knights) the classical material carried over, but contemporary material was the majority of the selections we'd drill to. I decided at an early age to save serious classical music study/listening for when I was much older, as a last resort for the time when amplified music became a hindrance to my hearing.
