Indeed, I think a certain number of audiophiles might even pretend to care more about classical music than they really do, for fear of being thought of as uncultured.

Go to any dealer open house or audio show. The most common demo fodder I hear is Patricia-Barber-style female vocals, and the next most common is over-produced vaguely Third World stuff with huge synthesized bass and very loud drums or drum synths. After that comes boomer rock, then jazz.

I heard of a guy who bought some hugely expensive loudspeakers, and the first things he played were "Hotel California" and a Tom Petty CD.

And the other side of the coin is that most classical lovers settle for a Bose Wave Radio or still have the stereo they bought in college or when they got their first good job.
