RE: What about tower records???

Tower's gigantic store in lower Manhattan was awesome. It was four (or maybe five) floors of music. Before Tower started having financial difficulties the store had stunningly deep stock. It was easy to kill an hour in there browsing, and if you went in without a specific purchase in mind you risked brain - lock from option overload. Down the block from the main store was the Tower Outlet where they sold excess stock and cut outs cheap. There were gems to be found if you were patient and willing to flip through hundreds of 12" rap singles, bad hair band albums, and classical LPs on obscure eastern European labels.

Tower's store in Stamford, CT had the best newsstand in the entire state. I once spotted Stereophile's Sam Tellig reading one of the UK classical music magazines there.
