Whilst I agree the performance is #1, it would be nice if the SQ could be top notch as well. After all, it is their day job - so why can't the people involved, get it right? :-))
With very old recordings (like Pablo Casals playing Bach), you put up with the hiss and the tinny sound just to hear him play ... but I must admit I listen to the Starker versions more often, because of their great recording.
