Dave, can you suggest a venue to hear maximum dynamic range?
Even my house at 0-dark-30 has enough ambient noise to have some of the really quiet stuff buried in the dogs barking....from 3 doors down, or the odd loud bit of traffic from the street a block+ away. For the few bits of material which use the entire dynamic range of a CD, than you are forced to bring up or match levels. Or the quiet passages simply disappear in the mud.
I noticed an immediate improvement on my small dish when I shut off the compression / leveling feature mainly of use late at night to help quiet passages and prevent 'blasting'. OFF, even the music radio feeds sound better. Though individual channels....like 'Watercolors' continue to have other problems.
The wiki I posted shows clear o-scope traces of what this stuff looks like. The 'hearing' is less obvious, but noted more by its absence in comparisons. You can train to the sound.
Too much is never enough
