Sheffield Labs

Do you know how Sheffield rehearses or prepares for live-to-2-track?

I wonder if the mixing engineer is adjusting things in real time. He is a "performer" in that sense. Better get it right or you screw up the take. If you are direct-to-disk, one mistake and you screw up the whole side of the record.

I know someone who was present at a number of Sheffield's direct-to-disk recordings. He told me that the more takes they did, the better the musicianship got. As they got very tense, you would think they would be more likely to make a mistake, but it had a kind of group effect that intensified the performances.
