Virtually every recording uses some degree of compression, I'd bet including Sheffield's. IIRC they've recorded big bands, and there are no speakers I'm aware of that could handle the full dynamic swings. If without any compression whatsoever you could hear a whisper soft ppp bass clarinet or bass flute or solo string instrument or bass drum, the fff of a full orchestra would blow your speakers.Offensive compression is about allowing maxxed out volume, and every engineer I've come into contact with is disgusted by the bogus use of it. OTOH there aren't that many mastering engineers who can afford to blow off money (let alone a string of gigs offered by large labels or pop stars) and refuse to apply what they know are anti-musical amounts of compression. Hence, the loudness war.
Its a marketing decision, plain and simple. If consumers en masse refused to purchase severely compressed recordings, that'd be the end of the loudness war.
