If you want to hear what compression doesn't sound like, try to find a CIMP jazz CD. These are purportedly recorded without any compression. They show how critical wide dynamic range is to conveying the placement of instruments and a sense of depth in a natural acoustic space. But get ready to fiddle with the volume control to hear nuances during the quiet spots.
