audiophile memories

one time was when i kept my mouth shut and listened to mel schilling explain why amplifiers sound different during a demo. in particular he was demonstrating ElectroResearch amps driving infinity QRSs. one of the things he said was that an amp must start fast (well known) and also stop fast (not so well known) and so to listen for the silence between the notes.

BINGO jack! i continued to learn this way and to hang at the university of audio at its satellite branches like Music and Sound (mel schilling), Woodland Stereo walt lewsadder), Jonas Miller Sound, Sound Center (barefoot paul carvel), and many others in the LA area. it also helped to have a savvy friend who had worked in radio and places like superscope, infinity, and drake-chenault.

hearing quad 57s, rogers LS3/5As (ended up buying a pair used), various infinity, JBL, RTR, Janszen, AR, dahlquist, Dynaco, Lentek, Sound Labs, and other speakers too many to list refined my listening skills nicely. and yes the many amps/preamps both ss and tube.

during that time i met people like joe grado, enid lumley, john ulrich, steve mc cormack, and other industry icons that shaped my ideas one way or another.

jokes of the day were the infinity servo-statik modifcation of the week and the delivery schedule of tas.

i remember being amazed at seeing skip weshner (an audiophile radio show host that had a show on just that subject) walking into sound center with a naked grace 707 n his hand for paul to put a new cartridge in. that took away my fear of tonearms and cartridge mounting. yes, i ended up with a 707 bought at music and sound on a technics SL120 (armless 1200) which sounded pretty good with my adcXLM.

woodland stereo had a great service guy-michael fraser-who modified arc preamps. he is probably the reason i now have a SP3A1 (upgraded to c by arc).
...regards...tr
