Tony is right

One impulse is all you need. After all dead silence on any digital medium is all zeroes in binary code. Any sound is automatically going positive. With one spike, It is either positive or negative, determining the polarity of the analog stage following the DAC. It is very simple to do and to test: a simple oscilloscope is all you need. With that you can trace polarity through everycomponent including your speakers (see AES 26).

It is quite interesting that you find all these expensive DAC and CD players inverted. It is quite interesting to note that you consider your Adcom to invert polarity inrespect to its switch. All these electronic designers are apparently wrong, but you are correct. I find that the vast majority of players and DAC's follow the same convention in terms of polarity when they have switches. They have been far more consistent than my recordings.
