My understanding is there have been tests under controlled conditions that indicate that absolute phase is audible. There was an article by Stan Lipshitz in the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society as far back as 1982 that confirms it is detectible at frequencies under 500 Hz. I'd imagine there have been other tests.
I'd agree with anyone who said, that due to multi-miking, mixing and processing even in classical and jazz, there are precious few recordings that would allow this effect to make a practical difference in playback, but that is a different issue that saying it doesn't exist at all.
The fact that I lack that ability (or don't care to develop it if a matter of training) doesn't prevent me from accepting the issue may be important to others. I know people who find subwoofers and high volume important to their sense of realism when listening. I don't need that either to enjoy my system despite the even more clearcut audibility of those traits.
We are individuals and do listen for different things in music. I happen to like brussels sprouts and many people don't. I don't think it is my place to disbelieve them, or vice versa.
