RE: Absolute Phase; I Can't Hear It

Dear Sparky and inmates,

In the introduction to "The List" I list the functionality of my equipment and test methodology. I felt that it would be a distraction to list the specific equipment but here it is: Adcom GCD-575 with mislabeled polarity switch and a digital and analog output that wrongly defaults to inverted polarity when the player is turned off and on, a Sony TA-3200F power amplifier that's non-inverting, and custom made by me non-inverting speakers. I haven't found that oscilloscope representations of musical signals are useful unless one first knows the polarity of the media. In that case the effect of reversing polarity is clearly visible but if polarity could be discerned reliably without comparing the original mike feed to that of the played back media, then why hasn't that been done because that would be quite easy and at least settle the argument once and for all as to the polarity of a specific item of media.

Also in the introduction there's a link to my think piece, A Speculation on the Perception of Detail, I describe some of the sonic and musical effects of inverted and non-inverted polarity and the problems of listening to non-coherent speakers, e.g. speakers with 2nd order crossovers that require contiguous frequency ranges to be connected to the amplifier(s) in opposite relative polarities. The think piece describes a test for the audibility of relative polarity of music that's definitive.

George
