Relevant to Jim's comments on tubes, a friend told me he got away from tubes because he realized that every time he turned them on, some degradation had taken place, even if it was miniscule. The irony with him was that after a couple of years building and modifying SS gear, he returned back to tubes -- but to SETs this time.
Also, I think that CB's comment "go two years without being switched off" might be important. Tube replacement need could be as much a case for how often they are switched on as for how many hours they are run. As someone pointed out, how often to you see a lightbulb fail on turn-on compared to failing while it is on?
