The noted audiophile Matthew Henry once said,
None so deaf as those that will not hear.
None so blind as those that will not see.
I don't know if a break in CD works or not—never tried one—but I do know from experience that:
a. Nosebleed prices notwithstanding, cables can make a difference. Connecting Purist Audio Colossus speaker cables to my system made such a dramatic improvement, it was not debatable. I regret having them refurbished—they never sounded as good.
b. I have heard improvement as cables break in—most recently with ICs and power cables.
Of course, any audible change depends upon the quality of the gear the connects are connected to. Great cables won't salvage a suspect system. For example, if a Sony Discman is one of your sources, you've pretty much limited what you can expect to hear right out of the gate.
I appreciate what I have learned from inmates and am smart enough to know I have a lot more to learn. I've learned to keep an open mind.
There are all sorts of definitive comments on this website. Of course, not all opinions are created equal. There are some real experienced folks whose opinions I hold in higher esteem than others. Let's face it. Some folks can afford more audiophile experiences.
I'm no snoot and won't be joining the yacht club anytime soon, but in my opinion, anyone with a Sony Discman as a source in his system has credibility issues when (quite rudely) debating the fine points of audio with a guy hearing things through an Ayre.
