I started on this quest around 1960. I was in more record stores than I can possibly remember, especially in the early days. I was buying classical music and frequented stores that had a lot of it. They usually had classical music playing on a good system, but rarely did I hear a system that I thought was equal to, let alone better than my home system- AR 3, Dyna Stereo 70 and PAS-3, and RKK TT with Shure cartridge. It took some saving, but I bought this while I was a college student. On the other hand, I hear lots of concerts, both at college and in concert halls. Live music sounded a LOT better. That was lure for me and many people I knew- getting closer to the live music experience. It is still my lure, and though I know I will never duplicate the SOUND of listening to live music, I've gotten pretty close to the EXPERIENCE of listening to live music with improvements over the years.

One additional remark- over the last decade it seems every time I was in a music store it wasn't the sound quality that was bothered me, it was the music they were playing. I was taking advantage of 50% off at Tower a few days ago- lots of SACDs- and I had leave because I just couldn't stand the bizarre rap music being played at close to 100dB.
