Oh my Allah, after reading about your system I was almost in tears with laughter. *&%$ing hilarious! Couldnt agree more. Somewhere out there theres a witch-doctor just waiting to unveil his stereo that will trample that of anything Art Dudley has heard.Anyway, on the note of multi channel digital audio. When mastered and channeled/leveled properly and played back on a great system that was setup properly, yeah I bet it could. However we are now limited to music that WAS infact recorded multi-channel from the get go. I have a hard time envisioning a 2 ch recording from the yesteryear or now being remixed into say 7.1 or whatever and sounding better than it could when done in its native 2 ch on an equally good system. However, I must admidt, I have not pursued this theory personally and have only heard a handful of multi-channel audio CDs at various audio stores/shows. So I clearly am no expert nor have I ever claimed to be one on anything. However what Ive heard thus far in multi-ch audio has not impressed me at all. It just sounds like Im listening to Floyd on the best acid known to man. Not better sounding per say. But again, if a CD were recorded with multi in mind I bet it could yeld one hell of experience, and the thought of a live DVD recorded well and in multi, I too would be hit in the head by a T-bone slide :-)
In closing, my feelings are, respectively, formats are best heard in their native tongue. Now, for the record, I also feel there are exceptions to every rule. There might very well exist (or soon exist) a multi channel recording of say Kind of Blue that just blows the doors off a Columbia 6 eye mono/stereo pressing. While I doubt it, I cant rule it out. And as the saying goes, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Im also proud to say I dont feel tube is “always†better than SS or analog is “always†better than digital. Theres good and bad examples of both, end of story. There are simply some few components/recordings that stand above the masses as great examples. And these examples exist in any and all camps.
Just my feelings, and Ive learned countless times in life, I definitely dont represent the masses. Sigh......
