I agree with your observation...current music stores showcase reproduction lacking in inspiration.If you accept that apeakers contribute a lot to the sound ( a view espoused by many, though not all), then maybe it's the speakers?
I personally dislike almost all modern speakers (even the best ones), and can only listen to the high efficiency speakers of yeteryear...
the large coaxials, woofers, horns etc. with their alnico magnets.
To me, they make music sound real, even with my cowon FLAC player, or any decent CD player.
Low efficiency speakers of today, while flatter, just make the music sound dead to me. no matter what amp is driving them.
so it may not be the source, as much as the speakers.Appena un pensiero
