...there was no Golden Age of audio when everyone had fantastic systems and cared intensely about music and the fidelity of such...I don't remember ever going into a record shop that had a killer system...mostly it was some beat to sh*t rig that someone didn't care if it took a beating...complete with speakers nailed up in the corners of the ceiling.
High end was niche then and it's niche now.
Probably always will be...
BUT
Nowadays there are more brands and brand presence than ever before.
And to say that folks into digital don't care about music and its reproduction is not exactly true...
Look at the proliferation of headphone web sites and cmoy amps, etc for portables...that's where the next gen is coming from...that and computer audio.
