The Lure that Motivated Improved Sound Reproduction.....

Earlier today, I was thinking about why people were once motivated to reproduce their music with improved fidelity, but not motivated today.

Then I realized something that I think is rather profound.....

At one time, when vinyl was still the primary music source for consumers, I would walk into a record store or consumer audio store, and immediately notice the sonic presentation in the store was strikingly superior to what a lot of us were used to hearing before entering the store.... An experience that occurred consistently each time I walked into such an establishment. And I think that motivated a *lot* of people into attaining that kind of sound in their homes. Not necessarily with high-end products, but for some of these people, including myself, it started a journey that would ultimately lead to high-end sound.

But since digital audio became mainstream, in spite of all the claims of improved sound quality brought to the masses, the experience of walking into a music or consumer audio store and getting hit with that improved sonic presentation is now a distant memory. I'll often hear a powerful and detailed presentation, but the sound otherwise didn't evoke the urge to upgrade an audio system or purchase the album.

I think this could be a major reason why people today are no longer interested in superior sound reproduction- They are no longer exposed to superior sonic presentations that used to be commonplace at consumer music and audio retail establishments. Not to mention being a major reason why brick-and-mortar music stores are in danger of extinction.
