Routine...

I'd have a harder time thinking of recordings that don't extend beyond the boundaries of my speakers than ones that do. Only the truly bad are limited to the space between the speakers - and of course mono are limited to a 1" square exactly between my speakers.

I sit in a 13' equilateral triangle with my Quads - but the trick is they are 8' from my rear wall. They fill my 23' room routinely no matter how low the volume - but more to the right because the right wall is further away from the right speaker than the left wall is from the left - your ears are smart, they hear room boundaries.

I take this entirely for granted - have for the 20+ years I've owned the quads (when they've been in rooms that can accommodate). Although tube amps can increase the spurious sounding information spatitally, my little Quad 303 equals their soundstage with specific placement of sounds and instruments - love it.

However, overall width isn't nearly as important as the smoothness of the spread, and the coherence of it - add beautiful tonality to that picture, and you have a spine tingling musical experience. I have some minimonitors that image and extend well (NHT Superzero's) but they have "hotspots" - sounds disembodied from the rest of the music, some areas of the soundspace loud, others recessed - they just can't make the smooth, coherent spread like my Quads, although it's not a fair fight really - the tonality and sheer surface area of the Quads make it a very unfair fight. Until you hear it, it really can't be explained adequately. The Quads are the worst speaker on earth in the wrong room though, even I was amazed when I first got a really great room for my Quads some 7-8 years ago, I thought they were pretty good before that but had no idea how good they could really be.
